Traveling with Pets: Hotels

When it comes to hotels and pets, there are three kinds of properties in this world:

  1. Those that say, “Absolutely not.”

  2. Those that say, “Fine, I guess,” for a fee.

  3. And those who throw your dog a welcome party.

We're focusing on the latter two today—places that will accept your four-legged companion, and those that genuinely roll out the red carpet for them. Knowing the difference can make or break your stay.

Hotels That Allow Pets

Most big-name hotel brands—Hilton, Marriott, IHG—operate under a franchise model, which means each individual hotel sets its own pet policy. That’s why it’s essential to call the actual property’s front desk (not just the national reservation line) before booking. Policies vary not just between brands but between locations.

Some stats to help set expectations:

  • About 66% of Hiltons allow pets

  • Roughly 50–60% of Marriotts

  • Around 40–45% of IHG properties

Even when pets are welcome, there are often fine-print restrictions. Here's what to look for:

Common Pet Policy Details

🐾 Pet Fees:

  • Usually charged after check-in, not shown during booking

  • Flat fee per stay is most common—typically $35, $50, $75, or $125

  • Tiered fees for longer stays—like $75 for 1–4 nights, $125 for 5+

  • Recurring fees at extended-stay properties (charged every 2 weeks or so)

🐾 Restrictions:

  • Dogs only, in most cases (occasionally cats too)

  • Usually limited to 1–2 pets per room

  • Some require pets to be crated during housekeeping visits

🐾 Perks (If You're Lucky):

  • Dog beds, bowls, or treats provided

  • Welcome gifts at check-in

  • Invitations to happy hours or social events (with your pup!)

  • Concierge referrals for grooming, walking, or pet-sitting services

Hotels That Truly Welcome Pets

These are the ones where your dog is greeted by name and maybe even offered a cookie before you are. They often provide thoughtful touches like pet menus, green spaces, and the kind of vibe that makes traveling with a pet feel less like an exception and more like the norm.

What to Ask Before Booking a Room with Your Pet

Go straight to the source, call the front desk and ask:

  1. Do you allow pets? Any breed, weight, or quantity restrictions?

  2. What are the fees? Flat, tiered, or recurring?

  3. Can pets be left in the room unattended? If yes, crate required?

  4. Are there pet-friendly rooms on the first floor or near exits? Is there a relief area onsite or nearby?

  5. Can I request a quiet room? Away from elevators or entrances—ideal for anxious pets.

  6. Do you offer pet amenities? Beds, bowls, treats—sometimes only if you ask.

  7. What are the best local spots to walk my dog? Hotel staff should know.

Pro tip: We once stayed at a Hilton in Santa Fe. Turned right out of the lobby—nothing but asphalt. Turned left— A gorgeous park. Local knowledge matters.

  8. Do you offer or partner with any pet services? Groomers, walkers, sitters.

  9. Any pet-friendly events or programs during our stay? Never hurts to ask.

Pro Tip: Call again 1–2 days before arrival to confirm the pet policy and your specific requests. Things can get lost between the booking and the welcome desk.

Packing List for Your Pup’s Hotel Stay

Bring the essentials—and a few creature comforts:

🦴 Leash

💩 Waste bags

🍽️ Food & water bowls

🥩 Food & treats

💊 Medications

🛏️ Crate and/or bed

🧸 Toys or chews for entertainment

📄 Vaccination records or health certificates

Some hotels offer these amenities — but many only if requested in advance.

Final Thought

Traveling with your pet can be joyful and deeply bonding—or it can be chaotic and stressful. A little planning goes a long way. When in doubt, ask the front desk, double-check the fine print, and trust your gut.

And if you need help finding the right place for your whole pack? That’s what I’m here for. 🐾
